Apr 17, 2007 - Small Engine Rule to Bring Big Emissions Cuts

EPA continues to mow down harmful emissions from the nonroad sector with a new proposal that sets strict standards for most lawn and garden equipment and small recreational watercraft. "From the largest locomotives to the smallest lawn mowers, EPA's current and planned clean air regulations will continue environmental progress, keeping the air cleaner than a generation ago," said EPA Acting Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Bill Wehrum.

The proposal is groundbreaking in several areas. To meet the new exhaust emission standards, manufacturers are expected to use catalytic converters for the first time ever in many types of small watercraft, lawn, and garden equipment. After rigorous analysis and extensive work with diverse stakeholders, EPA determined that such a strategy was feasible and safe.

Dec 11, 2006 - CALIFORNIA TO LIMIT LAWNMOWER EMISSIONS

Editorial

The Environmental Protection Agency granted California long-awaited permission Monday to slash emissions from lawnmowers and other small-engine machines, a change it will seek nationally next year. The EPA waiver will allow the nation's most populous state, starting Jan. 1, 2007 to require highly polluting small engines to be sold with catalytic converters that cut smog emissions by roughly 40 percent.

Aug 06, 2006 - CALIFORNIA LEADS ON WARMING

Editorial

Tony Blair, the British prime minister, who worries about global warming more than any other world leader, has finally found an important American ally: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California. This week, the two agreed to collaborate on cleaner-burning technologies and to explore an emissions-reduction program that would combine mandatory controls on greenhouse gases with market incentives to reduce the costs of compliance.

Aug 06, 2006 - A GLOBAL WARNING

Scientist Says Global Warming Intensifies Storms, Raise Sea Levels

There's been a debate burning for years about the causes of global warming. But the scientists you're about to meet say the debate is over. New evidence shows man is contributing to the warming of the planet, pumping out greenhouse gases that trap solar heat.

Much of this new evidence was compiled by American scientist Bob Corell, who led a study called the "Arctic Climate Impact Assessment". It's an awkward name ? but consider the findings: the seas are rising, hurricanes will be more powerful, like Katrina, and polar bears may be headed toward extinction.

July 03, 2006 - PATH NOW CLEAR FOR CLEANER MOWERS

Bond has backed off his opposition, so the EPA eyes new emission rules.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is on the brink of tendering new emission standards for lawn mowers, which will in turn affect other equipment powered by small spark-ignited engines. These new EPA rules will likely stem from the more stringent controls that are expected to be approved in California later this year. California's new regulations are expected to cut small-engine pollution by about 35 percent. Companies such as Honda Motor Co., Kawasaki and Kohler support the implementation of these more stringent regulations.

June 30, 2006 - NEW CLEAN AIR STANDARDS FOR SMALL ENGINES LOOM

Source: ScippsNews

Despite California's delayed efforts in recent years to cut smog-forming emissions from lawn mowers and other pollutants known to exacerbate health ailments, federal regulators have indicated they are ready to endorse California's endeavors. Furthermore, these new standards are seen as the model for new federal regulations and may be adopted across the entire country. Small engine manufacturers are supporting these changes stating that "Nothing should stop the EPA from moving forward with a regulation for all of the country" (David Raney, Hondo Motor Co.).

June 29, 2006 - FEINSTEIN URGES EPA TO AUTHORIZE CALIFORNIA LAWNMOWER EMISSION RULES

By: Feinstein office

Senator Dianne Feinstein is advocating the authorization of small engine rules in California. The American Lung Association has estimated that 7100 Californians die each year from illnesses related to unhealthy air. Feinstein believes that California's small engine regulations would help prevent such deaths and would reduce small engine emissions that are equivalent to the pollution generated by 4 million cars. With support from various small engine manufacturers and the National Research Council's report confirming the need to implement more stringent emission standards, the evidence is clear - it is time to endorse California's efforts.
