Technology

EVCC's catalytic mufflers, like all other catalytic mufflers, combine a muffler and a catalytic converter into one unit. However, EVCC has used a unique approach to develop these devices, making them far more effective in reducing the emissions of small engine machines such as lawn and garden equipment- without compromising on the side of engine performance. EVCC currently has two patented catalytic muffler designs: the Reverse Flow Catalytic Muffler and the Combined Catalytic Muffler.

Reverse Flow Muffler

EVCC's reverse flow catalytic muffler has been designed to fit 4 stroke off- road engine applications, such as lawn and garden equipment and recreational vehicles. While this catalytic muffler provides unprecedented emission reductions and significant sound attenuation, it foregoes the use of perforated pipes, baffles and other excess materials as found in other mufflers- ultimately reducing the cost to the end-consumer.

Another advantage of this catalytic muffler over its peers is the divided substrate. A typical catalytic muffler only uses a small percentage of the substrate as the flow passes through the substrate's center- creating higher pressure and heat on the center of the substrate. This process leads to the deterioration of the converter, and the entire catalytic muffler must be replaced. In contrast, the substrate in EVCC's reverse flow design is divided into quadrants, allowing for the flow to pass through the catalyst numerous times. In using a greater percentage of the substrate, EVCC's device not only benefits from additional exposure to the catalytic agents (reducing emissions), it also distributes the heat and pressure produced by the flow, allowing for a more durable product.

Combined Catalytic Muffler

EVCC's forward flow catalytic muffler has been designed to fit both 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines. Manufactured with separate catalyst flow zones in a side-by-side arrangement, this design is often used for smaller engines with restricted muffler space. Nonetheless, it is linearly designed, and can be modified to fit engines of much larger scale.

Similar to its catalyst brother, EVCC's reverse flow design, this muffler utilizes the maximum amount of catalyst cross-sectional area in a minimum amount of space. In addition, this design also offers outstanding emission reductions and sound attenuation without the use of perforated pipes and baffles.

In addition, both of EVCC's catalytic muffler designs differentiate themselves in terms of nitrogen emissions. During conventional fossil fuel combustion, there is a trade-off between particulate matter and Nitrogen- a reduction in nitrogen would lead to an increase in particulate matter, and vice versa. However, EVCC's technology decreases the amount of nitrogen emitted (NOx), without increasing the emissions of particulate matter.

Numerous tests, at facilities such as Environment Canada's Emission Research and Measurement Division, Carnot Emission Services and Bombardier Inc Factory Laboratories, have shown that EVCC's catalytic mufflers are capable of reducing more emissions than all other devices on the market.
